LIVE FILM! JACK SMITH! was a film, performance and lecture festival celebrating the work of underground American filmmaker Jack Smith. It took place in Berlin in the fall of 2009. It was organized by Susane Sachsse, Marc Siegel and Stefanie Schulte Strathaus. In exchange for our work we got a trip to Berlin. We planned to design everything while we were there, but that didn't quite pan out (we finished the work remotely from our bases in Detroit and Zagreb). We were inspired by Smith's idiosyncratic aesthetic as well as our client's enthusiasm for and appreciation of his work. We decided to open up the design process and let them choose the main typeface from a group of weird, under-appreciated, widely-available and free fonts: Matura Script, Fox Script, Brush Script and Choc ITC. We were hoping they would choose Matura Script, but to our (initial) dismay, they chose Choc ITC. We were worried that this typeface seemed like a corporate version of a punk look, like "Microsoft punk". But they were unanimous in their choice and we felt pretty stuck. We tried in vain to change their mind and regretted including Choc ITC in the list of choices. But they explained that "Microsoft punk" seemed appropriate for Jack Smith. Eventually we grew to like it too.
